Von Elizabeth Maconchy liegt ein reiches Ouvre vor, u. a. ein gutes Dutzend Streichquartette und ein Violakonzert. Daneben hat sie in pädagogischer Absicht einige leichte Stücke für zwei und drei Instrumente geschrieben, wieder einmal etwas für Anfänger. Die 5 Sketches für Viola allein hingegen sind nicht für Anfänger gedacht. Die Komponistin sagt im Vorwort: «I have always had a particular affection for the viola, with its beautiful dark tone-colour and its unlimited expressive range. I have tried in these pieces to explore that range and to make them well varied in rhythm and content.» Die dreisätzige Sonate (Allegro, Lento moderato, Presto) aus dem Jahr 1938 wurde 2012 zum erstenmal eingespielt von Louise Williams und David Owen Norris (vgl. Hinweise unter McEwen).
