Whenever the Concerto by Franz Anton Hoffmeister is being played, commentators go to great pains mentioning that it is a known fact that Hoffmeister wasn't a first-class composer, and that his work ranks far behind the violin concerti of Mozart. But why these excuses? Be glad, that Hoffmeister wrote a concerto at all. By the way, Drüner says (in the preface to the first edition of the score): «The D-Major Concerto might well be the most beautiful Viola Concerto of the Viennese classical period; it is the closest to the models of Haydn and Mozart.» So there.
Only in the 70s was there a second Concerto (Bb-Major) published; this is as well wonderful classical music, a bit more demanding than the work in D. A few of the innumerable Duos with Violin are again available; unfortunately some of the same pieces have different opus numbers. Also available are three Duos concertante with Flute. One also finds larger ensembles: A Terzetto for Flute, Viola and Cello; 6 String Quartets with 2 Violas and a Oboe Quartet with 2 Violas. The 12 Etudes are concertante movts, which would fit nicely into a viola recital, e.g. nr.6 in a-minor or nr.9 in f-minor. Ashan Pillai, who recorded both concertos, added all 12 etudes, like an encore. A very recent surprise: Among the parts of the D-Major concerto someone found a middle movt (Siciliano in G-Major), apparently meant as an alternative to the Adagio in d-minor. W. Michel completed the 102 measures and published it as Romance for Viola and Strings (2 Violins and Cello). This new edition contains the full score as well as the piano reduction and, of course, all the parts. The Romance «may be played as a String Quartet, in which the viola then becomes the 'Primarius'» (Michel).
